Yay!

It's Black Friday!

Here's a quick Black Friday story.....

I remember when my (now 35 year old) 12 year old son wanted a computer, and they were SO expensive 23-ish years ago. They were also dial-up, slow, clunky, and kind of worthless..... But they were the new thing!

Our little family was visiting in Carson City, NV with my mom for Thanksgiving that year, and the next morning was the BIG Black Friday sale at the brand NEW local Walmart.

And guess what?

Computers were on sale for $800. (Gulp---totally a credit card purchase back then nearly 25 years ago. It was a LOT of money for us.) But what a great gift for the whole family, I thought.

So my little mom and I (she is only about 4'11 tall) ventured out in the pitch black early morning hours and got there at around 4:00 in the morning. The line was already stretching through the parking lot!

We waited and waited....and waited. For hours! Then they opened the doors. It was like a herd of wild beasts trying to fit through a few small openings.

My mom and I were in the thick of it....but I HAD to get a computer.

We pushed and shoved like the best of them....mostly for survival. 🥰 The place was packed. By the time we got to the shopping carts, there weren't many left, but we got lucky and grabbed one of the last ones. Then we trotted as fast as we could to the electronics section through the masses of people.

When we got there.....

There was only ONE computer left. Just one.

I literally bolted for it, and managed to muscle that enormous box from the floor into the cart. Then this big man came along....

He TOOK IT OUT OF MY CART and put it in his!

I started to cry, and my mom to bluster. Then another a man standing nearby came over and took that computer from the burly man and told him we had it first, and placed it back into our cart for us.

Thanking the kind man profusely, we headed right for the register.

What an adventure. What a mom will do for her children..... And I have a special place of gratitude for kind people who pop into my life at the perfect times..... I still say, "Thank you," to that wonderful stranger.

Today's Black Fridays don't look much like they did in the old days, do they?

Now we're shopping online and inundated with sales emails from these same computers that were so scary (at least for old folks like me) back then.
