The one skill I learned that turned me into a master herbal medicine formulator🌿🌼🌿

March 13, 2026

Happy Friday!

I learned ONE skill over the nearly 20 years studying herbalism that catapulted my herbal formulation success rate to nearly 100%. And if you have an herbalism practice or desire to make herbal medicine for yourself and others, then read closely because you'll also learn some of my best tips and tricks for developing this one skill.

It's a skill that acts as a lever for supporting health the right way for your clients, family, friends, neighbors, and others you choose to work with in your herbalism practice. This skill makes your medicine making infinitely LIGHTER and EASIER.

And it's interesting, because I've asked some of my students to rate their expertise level on this "one skill" on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being mastery), and the ones that rate themselves low are struggling to make herbal medicine that works consistently.

Plus, this is the one skill they've been asking me to teach for nearly five years now so they can master the art of herbal medicine making and no longer be chained to others' formulations (that won't work for every individual).

If you had asked me back in 2016 to rate my ability on this skill, I would have said an 8 or a 9. WOW, I was MILES OFF target.

In fact, I was humbled to my knees after formulating the FIFTH product for a client....and nothing was working. I had done the intake form. I had determined what I thought were her needs. But I had unknowingly left out some very crucial questions....

BUT....as you know, our "problems" are all our best teachers. And this "set back" set me on a path to learn a new skill. To dive more deeply into my herbalism skillsets and to get away from allopathic thinking all together toward the kinder and more effective holistic thought process of taking the whole body into account (mind, body, emotions, spirit).

This is a skill that allows me to formulate right off the top of my head in many cases....because I know how to attend to a person's needs and ask the right questions....and I also know about how hundreds of plants work.

So what is this skill you need to master to become the best herbalist you can be? To really help others with what their unique body needs?

It's the ability to utilize a system of herbal energetics so that you can match the right herb to the unique and beautiful person you are working with and formulating for.

Asking the right questions matters. Knowing about the plants and what they can do in our body matters. Then, choosing the right plants for the individual matters.

When you employ knowledge of herbal energetics, you can...

🌿 dial in what the person needs based on their unique situation

🌿 determine what organs and/or body systems need attention

🌿 differentiate between the person's underlying needs and the immediate situation being presented and choose the best herbs accordingly

🌿 formulate effectively

🌿 YES! get amazing results!

And if you really think about it, everything you do in making herbal medicine involves considering the individual. THAT'S what herbal medicine making is all about. It's not about formulating for the masses....although that's a nice way to start, and some herbalists sell quite a lot of product.

But herbalism, TRUE herbalism, is about formulating for the unique person and their needs.

It's knowing that herbal medicine making is both art and science, and formulating with both in mind.

So, if your formulations aren't working, 90% of the time, it's most likely due to not paying attention to the person's constitution and the tissue states of the situation, all so you can choose the best plants with the actions you need in the formula....so it can work.

"Learning that each person has a unique combination of physical attributes that must be considered when formulating for them has opened a wonderful can of worms for me. I knew some of the plant energetics just from studying on my own....but I had no idea about the many aspects of human energetics. It's been fascinating to work with my clients and adjust formulas for their specific needs based on their energetics. Thank you for giving us another set of tools to work with." ---Jamie Parker-Frank, Herbalist and Student

and

"This course has made me more confident to try formulations, now that I better understand how to weave together people's constitutions with the plant energetics...The whole course was fascinating and so informative, and gave me the push I needed to not be so afraid to formulate. Thanks for all the work you put into it --- It's so appreciated!" ---Heidi Seabloom, Herbalist and Student

I can say this from many years of experience:

Learning and applying the skill of herbal energetics to your herbalism practice is the only way to increase the effectiveness of your herbal formulations and choices of application methods.

THAT is a SKILL. It's a skill that will help you help people...including yourself. It's a skill that when not used makes your ability to make effective herbal medicines outside of others' formulations VERY difficult.

I would love to teach you to master Western Herbal Energetics.

First, we look at how herbal energetics came to be in the world, along with a quick compare and contrast between the Western model (which is the newest and what we focus on) and older models from other places in the world.

Then, we dive into human constitution types and temperaments. You'll learn what to look for in different kinds of people so you can best select plant medicine for their needs without hurting them.

We look at specific tissue states too. This means that we're not only looking at the whole person (body, mind, emotions), but also looking at the specific need they desire change with and assigning understanding of the tissue states. A tissue state is how the condition presents. Is it hot or cold? Moist or dry? Full of tension? Or too relaxed?

Then we get into the fun part...and this is applying our knowledge of plant actions on the body so we can choose the best herbs for that person's needs.

Finally, we wrap it all up in a nice bow by looking at some examples of how to formulate for people. It includes a step-by-step section so you can really dial in what a client needs, what you're formulating for, and the questions you need to ask and why.

Whether you plan to be a family herbalist, a community herbalist, or a clinician, you need to learn energetics and how to apply the knowledge.

This is our beta launch for our Western Herbal Energetics course, and I'm so excited to offer this that we're giving you $45 off the price of the course.

March 11, 2026 When I began my journey into learning how to formulate herbal and aromatic medicines for ourselves, and then later, to sell (and now to teach), I didn't know what I didn't know. And I had a LOT of questions. 🌿 For example, I used to wonder why my sleep tincture worked great for some people, but not for others. 🌿 Why did some of my herbal teas dry some people out, but not other people? Or why some of them made urination more frequent for some, but not other people? 🌿 Why did...

March 4th, 2026 Hey, there! In my last note, I shared quite a lot about inflammation because so many of my readers, students, and clients have asked me for natural helps. If you missed that note, you can read it HERE. For today, I thought I'd share a bit more about inflammation and pantry (kitchen) herbalism so you can get started with some practical and easy ways to reduce inflammation in your body. If you’ve ever tried to “eat anti-inflammatory” and felt like you got sentenced to a lifetime...

February 22, 2026 Happy Sunday! This is going to be a quick note today because it's "bread" day after church. This is the day that happens every couple of weeks where I make enough bread for us, sometimes for the month, in case I miss a session. I've gotten into milling my own wheat berries for our flour to bake bread because it's been scientifically proven that fresh-milled flour contains 40 out of the 44 nutrients we need! The problem with normal flour, even whole grain, from the stores is...
