September 23, 2026 It's officially fall! Fall is one of my most favorite seasons, and I just love the balance that's finally back between day and night. Besides, it's time for my homemade Pumpkin Spice Creamer so I can enjoy my own version of the famous PSL (Pumpkin Spice Latte) right at home. And, it's actually healthy! Here's this week's reader question and answer: "I'm unable to attend your 'Ask the Herbal Lady' live as I teach preschool. Would you be able to address uses for dandelion tincture? I found some in my kitchen cupboard.
Is it beneficial for liver health or does it need to be the actual plant? I'm almost 65 and my skin is developing a lot of small bumps, freckle looking spots and thought maybe liver support might be a good idea. Thanks!" ---Tami
This is SUCH a great question, because dandelion is a very special plant. ALL the plant parts are edible and medicinally useful in their own way, but there are things you need to understand about medicine making to enjoy the benefits of medicinal plants. So, the first thing I would ask is: What plant part (leaves, roots, or flowers) is the tincture made from? This is going to determine its best use. Secondly, not all the plant's chemical constituents will extract well in alcohol, which is the base for an herbal tincture. Minerals and vitamins, found in high amounts in all the plant parts, generally don't extract well in alcohol, but they do in water and vinegar. But if the tincture is from the root, and it's a 100 to 150 proof alcohol that's used, then it will benefit the liver. It just won't have the typical diuretic properties, nor the nutritional value. Learn everything about foraging, harvesting, preparing, medicinal uses of the parts, and the plant constituents of dandelion, as well as how to use this amazing plant: Identifying and Foraging Dandelion: Survival Food and Medicine **There are lookalikes for dandelion, so it's good to know the indicators of true dandelion, and you'll find this in the article too. By the way! Fall is the perfect time to harvest the roots. You can also purchase high quality leaf and root from places like Oshala Farm, Starwest Botanicals, and Mountain Rose Herbs. By the way, dandelion root is GREAT for supporting the liver. It contains inulin, among many other wonderful plant chemicals (see the article above). Supporting your liver also supports the health of your lovely skin! ********************************** Ask the Herbal Answer Lady is Back! I'm Heidi of Healing Harvest Homestead and the School of Botanical Arts & Sciences (SOBAS)...Let's talk herbs, aromatics, & health! September 16, 2026 Happy Weekly Wednesday's Herbal! I'm so glad you're here! I used to be addicted to energy drinks..... I know. I know. Not the best thing for an herbalist of nearly 20 years to admit, right? But this was a long, long time ago, around the time I started learning to use medicinal plants for my health. For about 10 years from age 32 to 42, I loved...
September 9, 2026 Happy Wednesday's Herbal Note! Today, I am at the dentist having more painful work done. Two weeks ago, I had four root canals and slicing away of gum tissue. Today it's the removal of an implant gone bad, dealing with bone loss in my jaw, and removal of an impacted wisdom tooth. And there's more coming..... All this is due to having some crooked teeth and an implant I never should have gotten, as well as a LOT of enamel loss which has affected my bite and eating....
September 2, 2026 Happy Weekly Wednesday's Herbal Note! It's crazy that September is here already, isn't it? I'm still not quite out of August yet, so am trying to adjust. Today, I'm at my father's house in S. Utah. He is 90 now, and wow...so many memories. I was looking at a picture of him at age 62 (my age) when he ran his first of many marathons. I guess this explains his longevity, and although I am not a runner....I'm more motivated to "act" youthful for as long as I can because I do...
