January 3, 2025 Happy Friday, Reader! We ALL have aches and pains.... Did you know that aromatherapy and proper essential oil use can do some amazing things for pain relief of all kinds? My challenge for you is to give some of these essential oils a try next time you have a pain of some type.... Here are a few different kinds of pains and some of the essential oils that are helpful. Most of these are very inexpensive, and the tiny bottles store SUPER easily. The shelf life of most essential oils is from two to 20 years, depending on the components, which means a little investment up front gives you a nice remedy for a long time! ARTHRITIS (OR ANY SORE JOINT SITUATION) Arthritis is energetically considered a "cold" and stiff dilemma, and essential oils can be incredibly helpful. Certain ones can bring warmth and enhanced circulation to the area while being anti-inflammatory and pain soothing. Here are a few essential oils to consider for arthritis: Frankincense (Boswellia spp) Ginger (Zingiber officinale) Chamomile, German (Matricaria recutita) Black Pepper (Piper nigrum) Copaiba (Copaifera officinalis) Eucalyptus (E. globulus) and others! HEADACHES! **Aromatherapists will work to solve the root cause of the ailment, then make a decision on which oils would be best for the specific type of headache. But here are some generalizations: Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis syn. Salvia rosmarinus) Basil ct. linalool (Ocimum basilicum ct. linalool) Spearmint (Mentha spicata) Eucalyptus (E. globulus) SORE MUSCLES Birch (Betula lenta) Copaiba (Copaifera officinalis) Black pepper (Piper nigrum) Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) NEUROPATHY Neuropathy is a condition affecting the peripheral nerves, and essential oils can be wonderful helpers. Certain herbs can be great too! Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum) Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) MENSTRUAL CRAMPS Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) Sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana) Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) Black pepper (Piper nigrum) Ginger (Zingiber officinale) PAINS FROM STRESS AND TENSION **This is a double whammy kind of pain because here we have both emotions and physical pains involved. The essential oils below support both relaxation and pain relief from this kind of tension: Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) Black spruce (Picea mariana) Orange (Citrus sinensis) Sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana) There are many application methods for using these essential oils, such as in carrier oils, roller bottles, inhalers, diffusers of many kinds, scrubs, lotions, and so many more. You'll want to be sure the application method is the right one for each individual. Also, you'll want to know specifics about each essential oil. For example, some essential oils shouldn't be used with children, so you'd want substitutions. It's such a fun, respectable, and growing field! Whether you're just working with your family members or want to progress into a career, learning aromatherapy is a wonderful investment! RECIPE: EASY PAIN RELIEF SALVE Pains caused by inflammation are quite common as we age. Back pains, neck pain, pains in tendons and joints....many of these are considered "hot", and did you know that the word "inflammation" has a root word of "inflamare," which means "on fire." This salve is filled with cooling anti-inflammatory pain soothers for when you have a hot, inflamed situation like a sore back or tense neck. Ingredients: 1 tbsp beeswax 5 tbsp arnica infused oil or comfrey infused oil (or just olive oil if you don't have these) 20 drops black spruce (Picea mariana) essential oil 15 drops copaiba (Copaifera officinalis) 20 drops eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) 20 drops peppermint (Mentha x piperita) 10 drops birch (Betula spp) Directions: Melt the beeswax into the lipid (carrier) oil in a double boiler. Remove from the heat, and stir in your essential oils Pour into a small container (I like glass, like a little jelly jar) Allow to set up (solidify) completely. It's now ready to use! NOTE: This is an approximate 5% dilution and is good for use on people 12 years and older. This is for localized pains only, and NOT for full body use. Do not use Birch (or Wintergreen) with pregnant or breastfeeding women or for those taking blood thinners. You can substitute the birch with more peppermint and copaiba. See how easy this is? You just need to know safety foundations, application methods, and learn more about the essential oils! They're truly an amazing therapy. Did you know aromatherapy is becoming quite main stream? It's considered an alternative therapy and is even being used in some hospitals around the country. Other health modalities (chiropractic, massage, physical therapy, and others) commonly include aromatherapy in practices. BEST of all.... Aromatherapy fits tidily into your home use with family and friends. It's the CELEBRATION DAY SALE! What are we celebrating? Besides the New Year, we're celebrating the completion of our Aromatherapy Specialist Certification Program! January 12, 2024 Happy Scentsational Sunday, Reader! If you have a willow tree (Salix spp), especially if it happens to be Salix alba (white willow), then you have one of many herbalists' favorite medicinal herbs! It's nearly time for us to get ready for spring herbal harvests, and willow is one of the plants that we harvest bark from in the early spring, when you're pruning branches. It's a good idea to harvest the pruned branches and NOT directly from the tree. This provides good use for...
January 5, 2025 Happy Sunday, Reader! Do you know what sense affects over 75% of our emotions every single day? You're RIGHT! It's your sense of smell. Most of us don't realize how vital this sense is to our well-being, enjoyment and function (and even safety) in life. Science has demonstrated over and over that the fastest way to reach the emotional part of our brain (the limbic system) is through our sense of smell! Think about these scents and what they evoke for you: Coffee Fresh roses...
January 1st, 2025 Happy New Year, Reader! This note is FULL of gifts for you today! WOW! It's really 2025 already! Here we are! I love every new year. I know that old saying, "New Year, New You" is rather trite (and silly), but I love it anyway. It's full of hope of new beginnings, isn't it? In my office in town, I have a "thinking room," and I've got a 12 month whiteboard of plans on one wall. It's usually pretty filled in at this point, but today, it's still empty. I'm finding some...
